The Italian Historical Heirloom Classic Basil was described in Vilmorin’s: The Vegetable Garden 1885. We grow the basil every year here at Angel Field. Named for large crumpled and fluted lettuce-like leaves that are 3-4" long. Sturdy 18-24" plants. Sow seeds outdoors when the soil is warm and the temperature is around 65°F and try to stay them inside for 3-6 weeks before planting out. Pinch back Harvest stalks and pinch back flowers a little as the season progresses to keep them from bolting. All heirloom plants prefer rich well-drained organic soil.
